Dominionism
This is a good video and is countering dominionism whch is the church militant taking power. Dominion theology, also known as dominionism, is a group of Christian political ideologies that seek to institute a nation that is governed by Christians and based on their understandings of biblical law. Basically, it is the establishment of the heavenly kingdom on earth in anticipation of Jesus returning. That is completely contrary to Biblical teaching. There can be no kingdom until the King returns. Our job is not to desire political or religious power but to witness to the truth in word and deed. Below the video I add some of my own comments and redirection to resources.
Here’s Johnny! NARLY DOMINIONISM – twisting scripture is worse than tearing up the Bible (49 min)
So many interpreters mix up what is in the past and what is still future. For example, Matthew 24 contains two questions…..
....what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? (Matthew 24:3)
The sign of Jesus’ coming and of the “end of the world” are not necessarily the same thing. And what does the end of the world mean? The Greek word for world used here is aion which means age. End of what age? Mosaic age?
What many interpreters fail to realize is that Jesus’ words must have had a meaning and a fulfillment to that generation:
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled. (Matthew 24:34)
We have established then that there must have been a fulfillment in AD70 otherwise Jesus would have been designated a false prophet. However, was that fulfillment exhaustive? The Mosaic age ended but Jesus did not return to establish the kingdom…instead the gospel was preached to all nations. The time was not yet right. That means that Matthew 24 also has a future fulfillment and here is where we find the difficulty because the depicted future events and contemporary events often blend and are difficult to separate.
Here we talk about the in-breaking of the sovereignty of God in history. These are supra-historical moments where the will of God (often his judgements) disrupt the flow of history. Such was the judgement of sin and death brought by the ministry and crucifixion of Christ. That was an “in-breaking” of the Kingdom of God on earth with a subsequent display of divine power (Holy Spirit) and even a distortion of the space-time continuum (the transfiguration).
We are dealing with repeat patterns. There was a coming in judgement in AD70 and the persecution of Christians under Nero (666) saw the destruction of the Temple and the abolishing of the Mosaic age was a fulfillment (not the fulfillment) of Matthew 24. Another repeat happened in AD 134-136 with the false messiah Bar Kochba (666), who persecuted the Christians and brought about the final destruction of the nation. We still await the third overturning (I will overturn, overturn, overturn… until he come whose right it is , Ezekiel 21:27) and the final manifestation of the Anti-Christ who will be destroyed when Christ returns to establish his Father’s kingdom.
Once again I stress the repeat patterns. The Apocalypse and Matthew 24 had a partial fulfillment in the first century and they repeat in the (near) future. I suggest reading my Commentary on the Apocalypse; PRITA (Pattern Recognition In The Apocalypse). For the vulture/body saying in Matthew see my article below and for Bar Kochba as a manifestation of 666 see the article below:
Here is PRITA as a hyperlinked and indexed webpage. It is searchable if you want to look for Matthew 24 put the term in the search bar.
