CD147 plays an important role in human immunodeficiency virus type 1, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus, and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus infections. CD147 (Basigin) has been shown to be an essential receptor on red blood cells for the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum. Does this explain why HCQ might be effective?
