Another tour de force from Alison McDowell. If you watch nothing else this week watch this. Another four hour video but highly recommended. It will allow you to get a handle on how they will socially engineer us using technology and language.
Snow Crash is a science fiction novel by the American writer Neal Stephenson, published in 1992. In his 1999 essay “In the Beginning… Was the Command Line”, Stephenson explained the title of the novel as his term for a particular software failure mode (Snow crash) on the early Macintosh computer.
The most famous Nam-shub is the Nam-šub of Enki – a Sumerian spell to corrupt language. Once upon a time all mortals spoke the same language. But as soon as this Nam-shub was uttered, speech was confused, tongues twisted and nobody could understand their neighbor.
To summarize, Enki’s Nam-Shub in “Snow Crash” is a strong virus that uses language to alter the human brain. The modern analog of Enki’s Nam-Shub is algorithmic prejudice, which has the potential to perpetuate discrimination and injustice in society.It’s also related to the Leibnizian idea of a language of nature in which any distinction can be modelled purely as a number. Rather than look a word up in a dictionary, as you must with any human language, in the Leibnizian vision you’d know what the word meant just by parsing it lexically – as you understand any arithmetic number.
