The cash mandate was not a win

91.6% of Australian businesses have a turnover of less than 2 million which means that 91.6% of businesses can legally refuse cash (businesses with a turnover less than 10 million).   The treasury did not listen to any submissions, and the government is not on your side.

This is what will happen.  The banks will close more branches and remove more ATMs.   Small businesses will be FORCED to go cashless because they will no longer be able to bank their takings. The  West Coast region of Tasmania has been particularly affected by bank branch closures, with Queenstown losing its last remaining bank branch in September 2025. This has left residents and businesses with no bank within a 150-kilometre radius, requiring a multi-hour round trip to the nearest branch in Burnie. That was a sucessful experiment. It forced great hardship on the region and made life very difficult for busnisses.  Everything will be forced to go digital.
