Nuclear Winter

 

It looks like they want a limited nuclear exchange (tactical nukes).  As David DuByne noted, they have tested 2,000 nukes since the 70s (some in the stratosphere) and no nuclear winter ensued.  Hiroshima and Nagasaki are not nuclear wastelands.  In Chernobyl nature is slowly recovering: “The environment of Chernobyl is a paradox,” Davies said. “Despite its reputation as a wasteland, Chernobyl has become a site of high biodiversity”. Never the less, Chernobyl will remain contaminated for centuries simply because the release of radioactive material was far greater than that of fat boy.

The use of nuclear weapons is more about the fear factor and the psychological trauma that it will cause.  Never underestimate the psychological warfare element.
