The Chief Rabbi of Morocco

Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto has been appointed chief Rabbi of Morocco. Rabbi Yoshiyahu Yosef Pinto has deep personal, ancestral, and official connections to Morocco: Rabbinic Heritage: He descends from prominent Moroccan rabbinic lineages. On his father’s side, he is the great-grandson of Rabbi Chaim Pinto, a famous 19th-century Moroccan Jewish sage based in Essaouira. On his mother’s side, he is the great-grandson of Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira (known as the Baba Sali), another revered Moroccan-born kabbalist. Residence: After serving a prison sentence in Israel following a legal dispute, Rabbi Pinto moved to Morocco in 2017 and made it his primary residence. Official Leadership Role: In April 2019, he was officially installed as the Chief Rabbinical Judge (Chief Rabbi) of Morocco in a ceremony held at the Beth-El Synagogue in Casablanca. The appointment was made with the blessing of King Mohammed VI and oversight from senior Moroccan government and Jewish community leaders. In this role, he leads spiritual matters, Jewish courts (Beth Din), and the supervision of kosher certification in the country.  He also appears to be a “spiritual adviser” to black celebrities:
